After Hurricane Katrina a Federal law called The PetsEvacuation and Transportation Standards Act or PETS Act for short was enacted. This act allows local, state and federal governments as well as localnon-profit organizations to rescue and care for household and service pets duringa disaster and seek reimbursement from FEMA for expenses incurred. Locally, wehave purchased a limited amount of equipment that could be used in a localizeddisaster that may affect a portion of York County. The state has addressed thesituation on a much larger scale and FEMA on an even larger scale. The point isthere has been pre-planning completed to ensure pets can be cared for in adisaster.
