York County will host an event for proper disposal of household hazardous materials and personal document shredding on Saturday, March 6, 2021, from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon. The event will be held at the York County Public Works facility, 220 Public Works Road (off Highway 5) near the Moss Justice Center, York, SC.
This event is open only to York County residents and is for safe disposal of materials that shouldn’t be placed in the garbage can or aren’t accepted at the 16 Collection & Recycling Centers. Accepted items are leftover cleaners, chemicals, pesticides, fertilizers, pool chemicals, oil-based paint, turpentine, paint thinner, mineral spirits, brake fluid, and gas/oil mix.
Materials should be transported to the collection event in sturdy boxes with newspaper stuffed between the containers to prevent spills. Please leave items in the original containers to assist staff in identifying the materials. Pack items to make it easy for workers to unload from the trunk, truck bed or back seat. Due to overall safety and COVID-19 precautions, residents will be required to stay in the car. Participants will be asked a few short survey questions as they enter the drop-off area.
Shredding of personal documents will also be available for residents, provided by Carolina Shred.
No major appliances will be accepted and this program is for residents only, no businesses allowed. Infectious, biological or radioactive materials and explosives are prohibited. A hazardous material company will be on site to properly dispose of the materials collected.
The next scheduled event is October 2, 2021. The Household Hazardous Materials Collection Event is funded by York County Government. For more information contact York County Solid Waste Collection & Recycling at 803-628-3181.
