On Monday, Nov. 9, during a Special Called Meeting, York County Council voted Vice-Chair Christi Cox to serve as Chair of the York County Council. Cox is the first female to serve as Chair of York County Council.
“I am honored to serve as Chair of the York County Council,” said Cox. “I’m grateful that my fellow Councilmembers have entrusted me with this leadership role.”
Cox most recently served as Vice-Chair for York County Council, Chair of Finance and Operations Committee, and Chair of the Riverbend Ad Hoc Committee. Since being elected to Council in 2015, Cox has served as Chair of the Justice and Public Safety Committee (2015-18), and Chair of the Pennies for Progress Ad Hoc Committee (2015-18). Additionally, Cox has served on the Public Works Committee, Zoning Committee, Planning and Economic Development Committee and Health and Environmental Protection Committee. Cox represents County Council District five.
In addition, Council voted Councilmember Robert Winkler to serve as Vice-Chair of the York County Council. Since 2015, Winkler has served as Chair of the Planning and Economic Development Committee and has been a member of the Finance and Operations Committee. Additionally, Winkler has served on the Public Works Committee, Pennies for Progress Ad Hoc Committee, and the Justice and Public Safety Committee. Winkler represents County Council District three.
During Monday night’s meeting, Michael Johnson resigned as York County Council Chair. He also resigned from being a member of Council. Johnson was recently elected to the South Carolina State Senate; representing the 16th District. Council members thanked Johnson for his service, leadership, and commitment.
In January, newly elected York County Council members will be sworn in. At that time, York County Council will vote on a Chair and Vice-Chair to serve the next term.
