[ARCHIVED] Recycle Christmas trees and Other Christmas Items

Picture of Christmas tree and recycle sign

After Christmas, don’t throw your Christmas tree away. Residents can recycle their live Christmas trees at all 16 York County Collection & Recycling Centers from Dec. 26-Jan. 31. Residents will need to remove all the lights, ornaments and tinsel before bringing the tree to be recycled.

Christmas trees are considered organic waste; as a result, they can be composted, mulched or even converted into fuel. Christmas trees delivered to the York County Collection & Recycling Centers will be chipped into mulch and used on site.

Artificial trees that contain metal can be recycled year-round at all York County Collection & Recycling Centers; all lights and ornaments must be removed from the tree. Metal from artificial trees is reused for scrap metal.

Below are some additional holiday items that can be recycled year round at all York County Centers:

· Boxes, tissue paper and non-foil wrapping paper

· String of Christmas lights and electronics

· Used cooking oil

For additional information regarding recycling trees and holiday items, please contact York County Solid Waste Collection & Recycling at (803) 628-3191 or visit www.yorkcountygov.com
