[ARCHIVED] Household Hazardous Materials Collection and Document Shredding Event

HHM McCall Rolloff

York County and the South Carolina Department of Agriculture (SCDA) will host an event for recycling and proper disposal of household hazardous materials and pesticides on Saturday, October 6, 8am-noon. The event will be held at the York County Public Works facility, 220 Public Works Road (off Highway 5), near the Moss Justice Center, York, SC.

Most services provided by the event are open only to residents of York County, but unwanted and unused pesticides will be accepted from residents and farmers from any SC county. Pesticides will not be accepted from commercial businesses or commercial applicators. Quantities will be limited to 2500 pounds of solid and 300 gallons of liquid at no charge. Pesticide products include herbicides, nematicides, fungicides and other similar products used in agriculture production or around the home.

The event enables citizens to safely dispose of materials that shouldn’t be placed in the garbage can or aren’t accepted for disposal/recycling at the County’s 16 Collection & Recycling Centers. Accepted items are leftover cleaners, chemicals, pesticides, fertilizers, pool chemicals, oil-based paint, turpentine, paint thinner, mineral spirits, brake fluid and gas/oil mix. Empty pesticide containers will not be collected. Infectious, biological or radioactive materials and explosives are prohibited.

Materials should be transported to the collection event in sturdy boxes with newspaper stuffed between the containers to prevent spills. Please leave items in the original containers to assist staff in identifying the materials. Citizens will be asked to stay in their car while workers unload the materials. No major appliances will be accepted. A hazardous material company will be on site to properly dispose of the materials collected.

The next scheduled event is scheduled for March 2, 2019. The Household Hazardous Materials Collection Events are funded in partnership by York County Government and the SC Department of Agriculture. For more information contact York County Solid Waste Collection & Recycling at 803-628-3181 or John Stokes, SCDA, at 803-737-9696.
