Public Safety
The Department of Fire Safety offers residents a wide range of fire prevention and fire protection services. Employees are trained and equipped to provide fire safety inspections, fire investigations, and public fire education programs for people of all ages.
Office of Emergency Management
The Office of Emergency Management manages the activities of emergency plan development, emergency response coordination, recovery operations, resource development and emergency public education.
The emergency communications/911 center is staffed by fully trained emergency communicators. Each 911 communicator must complete approximately 400 hours of training including two weeks at the SC Criminal Justice Academy, National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification, certification in Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) and Emergency Fire Dispatch, before they are allowed to answer their first 911 call without assistance.
The Office of the Sheriff provides law enforcement protection to the citizens of York County. The Office of the Sheriff is separated between the Enforcement and Detention Division. The Enforcement Division is responsible for Uniform and Field Service, Criminal Investigative Services, Support Services, and Administrative Services. The Detention Division is responsible for the incarceration of individuals who are awaiting trial and also individuals who are serving a prison term in York County.
County Prison and County Detention Center
The Detention Center is a division of the Sheriff’s Office, and is located at the Moss Justice Center. It is a 565-bed direct supervision facility that opened in March of 1995. The Detention Center is charged with holding individuals who have been arrested by various law enforcement agencies in York County and held until they post bond or are ordered released by a court or transferred to a state institution after court sentencing. The Detention Center also houses inmates for the U.S. Marshal Service and Immigration and Customs Enforcement under an agreement that provides compensation to the county
The York County Prison is a division of the York County Public Works Department. It’s located behind the Moss Justice Center in York, and is a 256-bed minimum security, male and female facility. The Prison population consists of minimum-security inmates who have already been sentenced for a particular crime. The inmates are also used as an additional labor force for the Public Works Department.
