York County Geographic Information Services (GIS) is both a division of the Management Information Technology (MIS) Department and a countywide program of spatial data and application development. GIS division staff is responsible for overseeing the County’s baseline digital spatial databases and for providing state-of-the-art mapping and data services to County departments, citizens, local governments, and businesses. While GIS staff in other departments are responsible for day to day departmental data maintenance, the GIS division of MIS is only the caretaker or holder of the information.

This Office Does:

  • Maintains the GIS Online website for use by staff and citizens which enables anyone to browse or obtain spatial information.
  • Facilitates cooperative data sharing and coordination efforts among County departments to establish more efficient government workflow processes through appropriate usage of technology.
  • Provides historic orthophotography for years 1970, 1980, and 1990 through a web portal.
  • Provides instruction to map makers, data editors, and GIS field data collection staff in various departments.
  • Distribute GIS data to citizens through a web portal (at no cost).

This Office Does Not:

  • Make printed hardcopy maps for public.
  • Make edits to data (property parcels) but instead routes the inquiry to the responsible department (Assessor)

FAQs

My property is not drawn correctly; the boundary is drawn on top of my house, what should I do?
There are many variations to this question.  Use the submit problems website to let us know what the issue is.  A representative from the County Tax Assessor's Office will review your inquiry and let you know what actions are taken.
How do I get a map made of … ?
Use the GIS Online website to zoom to the area in question, add the appropriate map layers, and then print the map. Please check the Map Gallery for frequently requested PDF maps you can download and print.
My property is not supposed to look like what is presented when I review it using the GIS Online website.
Always check the officially recorded document for the legal description of the property.  The disclaimer on the GIS web pages describes how the digital drawing of the property boundaries is an approximation of the legal documents.
How do I get historical map of aerial photography?
The county makes available 1970, 1980, and 1990 photos through a website. For detailed instructions on how to access these photos click on the following York County GIS Blog link: Accessing Historic Imagery.
How do I obtain digital files of GIS data layers or tax data records?
All vector GIS layers are available at no cost.  This includes many layers including parcels, zoning, and streets.  Orthophotography for the 2009 flyover is available for a fee of $100.  Tax Property Records are available as a file for download.
