The Summer Feeding Program was established to ensure that children in low-income areas could continue to receive free, nutritious meals during long school vacations, when they do not have access to school lunch.

During the summer, the lack of regular nourishing meals at home is a problem for a significant number of families in our area. This program allows the children in these families to receive the nutrition they need for proper growth and development. In addition, many of our programs also furnish opportunities to continue a child's intellectual and social development. All together, the summer food program allows children to return to school healthy and ready to learn.

If you are an educator, you realize the benefits that the summer food program provides to the children in your school and community. We consider you our most valuable partner because you can promote our services to the very children who need help the most.

Your school is a critical link in helping us inform students and parents about this important opportunity. We will provide you with posters and handouts to be distributed in the classroom. Also, we would like to visit your school to explain the program at a PTA meeting or end-of-the-year school event.

The churches in our community can also help us make this program a success. Specifically, you can:

  • Promote the location of our sites in your bulletins, newsletters and services during the summer months.
  • Consider becoming a "site" or place where local children could gather each day to enjoy a nutritious meal offered by the Summer Food Program.
  • Support the program in other ways, such as, providing volunteers or transportation for children to the sites.

This program has been provided for children in York and Chester counties for the past 18 years. In the summer of 2002 we were able to serve a total of 362,439 children within these areas.
