Rabies is a disease caused by a virus carried in animals infected with the disease. It is spread by the bite or scratch of infected animals. Wild animals such as squirrels, foxes, raccoons, bats, and rodents are most commonly the carriers. These animals, however, sometimes infect household pets and occasionally an unfortunate person.

To protect people and pets, all dogs and cats in York County are required by law to be vaccinated against rabies every year. The law also states that rabies identification tags must be worn by dogs and cats at all times. To avoid the spread of rabies, York County has the right to impound pets without a proper rabies tag.

Low-cost rabies clinics are held countywide during the year to encourage everyone to vaccinate pets.
