Functions

The Public Works Department is comprised of six divisions that fall under the direction of the Public Works Director and Assistant Director. The six divisions of the department are:

  • Animal Control (803-628-3190)
  • Prison (803-628-3052)
  • Road Maintenance (803-628-3200)
  • Solid Waste Disposal (803-628-3186)
  • Solid Waste Collection and Recycling (803-628-3181)
  • Water and Sewer (803-628-3211)

Each division provides an important service to the citizens of York County and contributes to the quality of life experienced by those who live in our county. As stated in our mission statement, our goal is to provide quality services to the public utilizing the most efficient and effective means and resources available. We believe that by working together, we become empowered and are able to meet the goals set for our department.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains roads under the County’s jurisdiction
  • Manufactures and installs street name signs and traffic control signs
  • Provides water and sewer service within the County’s service area
  • Provides animal care and control services for York County
  • Operates sixteen convenience centers strategically located across York County
  • Operates a recycling separation center for processing of recyclable materials
  • Provides disposal services for municipal solid waste (household garbage)
  • Operates a construction, demolition, and land clearing debris landfill
  • Operates a prison facility

This Office Does Not

  • Does not maintain roads located in cities and towns
  • Does not provide curbside garbage collection
  • Does not maintain stoplights or signalization
  • Does not have the authority to waive fees without County Council approval.
  • Does not provide animal control services for horses or livestock 

Mission Statement

The mission of York County Public Works is to provide quality services that improve and enhance the safety, cleanliness, health, and quality of life in our community by supporting federal, state, and local laws through the daily operations of the department.

FAQs

Does York County offer curbside garbage collection?
Curbside garbage collection is not offered by York County.  This service is available through the municipalities or through private contractors.
What are your approved methods of payment for services?
York County accepts cash, check, money orders, and in some instances bank drafts.  At this time the department is unable to offer payment by credit card.
Does the county maintain all roads located in York County?
No. Roads are maintained by the South Carolina Department of Transportation, Municipalities, York County, or private individuals. York County maintains an approved inventory of roads approved by County Council for maintenance.
