Mobile GIS in the Stormwater Division of Planning and Development

Stormwater is a recent adopter of Mobile GIS technologies. The environmental compliance coordinator position was established by the county in 2003 to deal with MS4 NPDES Phase II permit requirements. York County is one of the first in the state to establish a mobile GIS solution that included the design of geodatabase model that would produce out of the box ArcPad forms for field data collection.

York County Stormwater has purchased a global positioning device (Trimble GeoXM Pocket PC) to conduct storm drain mapping throughout the County. In addition to underground pipes and roadside ditches, they will be mapping permanent Best Management measures (aka BMPs) like detention ponds, water quality ponds, retention ponds, drainage easements, rain gardens, inlets and outlets, watershed sub-basin land use, and sampling locations. We are currently working in residential subdivisions.
