Public Fire Education

The York County Department of Fire Safety provides public fire education classes and programs throughout the year. A “Fire Safety House” gives children training in what to do in the event of a fire in the home. Training includes kitchen safety, smoke detectors, fire alarms, fireplace safety, and evacuation from the home. Theatrical, non-toxic smoke is used to provide a realistic view of actual fire conditions. The “Fire Safety House” can also be used for severe weather training. Simulated storms are provided, along with television weather alerts and weather radio warnings.

The Department of Fire Safety also uses a remote control robot, “Patches & Pumper”, to teach children about fire safety. “Patches & Pumper” delivers his message by interacting with the children through a remote operator and voice communicator. The “Patches & Pumper” program can be delivered in the classroom or at a special event location.

Formal classroom fire safety classes are also provided to first and second grade school children. Instruction includes: Using 911, smoke detectors, exit drills, holiday safety, and matches and lighter safety.

For more information or to schedule a fire education program, please contact the York County Department of Fire Safety.
