The Inspection Division of the York County Department of Fire Safety conducts routine quarterly fire and life safety inspections of all businesses in the unincorporated areas of the county. Five Fire Safety inspectors average approximately 2,400 routine inspections per quarter. Inspections are also conducted for fireworks licensing and certificate of occupancy inspections for new construction. To request an inspection or to file a complaint, please call 803-909-7620.

All York County Department of Fire Safety inspectors have been certified by the State Fire Marshal’s Office as Resident Deputy Fire Marshals. This allows the York County fire inspectors to conduct state licensing inspections for foster homes, daycares, schools and other facilities licensed by the state. Resident Deputy Fire Marshals are required to receive continuing education to maintain their state certification.

The Inspection Division also conducts site and building plans review for new construction projects. These reviews include but are not limited to:

  • fire alarms systems
  • fire sprinkler systems
  • commercial kitchen hood
  • fire suppression systems
  • fire hydrant locations
  • fire apparatus access roads
  • high piled combustible storage requirements
  • other fire and life safety requirements in the 2006 International Fire Code
