The Auditor's Office is responsible for listing and assessing personal property for ad valorem taxation.
Information
- Personal property taxes in York County help pay for a variety of public services, including schools, law enforcement, libraries, and roads.
- Personal properties that are taxed include automobiles, trucks, motorcycles, motor homes, campers, trailers, watercraft, airplanes, and furniture, fixtures, and equipment owned by businesses.
- New residents have 45 days to pay their vehicle taxes and get their South Carolina license plate and registration. Vehicle taxes are due the month your tag expires. In order to obtain a valid decal for your license plate , vehicle taxes must be paid.
- Taxes on vehicles are computed at either 7.50% or 10.50% of the market value depending on ownership and gross weight. The tax rate of the district you live in is then applied.
- All vehicles must have a license plate in order to be operated on public roads. A temporary tag can be purchased for $5.00 at the Auditor's Office or the Department of Motor Vehicles. The temporary tag is valid for 45 days from the sale date. A regular license plate must be purchased at the end of the 45 day period.
- Personal property tax bills on watercraft, airplanes, and businesses are mailed in October and are due by January 15th. Watercraft taxes are computed at 10.50% of the market value. Taxes on furniture, fixtures, and equipment owned by businesses are computed at 10.50% of the net depreciated value reported on the annual return form filed by the business. Airplane taxes are computed at 4% of the value. The tax rate of the district you live in is then applied.
- Citizens living within all municipalities are billed for both county and city taxes on their personal property as well as real estate. The County collects both county and city taxes for those citizens.
- Active military personnel who claim legal residence in another state may be exempt from their personal property tax if they have a Leave and Earnings Statement showing the state of their legal residence.
